mix. by that i mean a few snowflakes, maybe a few ice pellets. some of the sleet that we see this time of year as the system moves in. the timing on this very small wintry event will be 1:00, 2:00. >> there is the radar. you can see the activity in the carolinas, pushing to southwest virginia. we are several hours away before any rain shower activity arrives. temperatures are cold enough for winter weather right now. 33 at reagan national. cold chunk of air across the northeastern corridor here. 25 up in binghamton. 26 this morning in pittsburgh. 28 in detroit. here is the forecast today. generally just going to be rain showers. we will get a push of warm air ahead of the precip. that will push temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s. the further north and west, temperatures are hanging out above freezing in places like fredricks, martinsburg,

time traffic. the state of the skins is looking better after the sixth win in a row. >> the win in philly sets up a show down with the dallas cowboys. here is how it happened. the eagles scored first with a touchdown pass but then the skins defense stepped up. on the offensive side they took over the game. robert griffin, iii threw two touchdown passes and alfred morris ran for another. coach shanahan talked about the turn around after starting 3-6. >> we did good things in the first half of the season but couldn't put teams away. we had the running game going but didn't take it to the next level with the receivers. i i think that has been the biggest difference is how the receivers have performed. >> the skins-cowboys game at

fedex next sunday will decide the eastern division. kick off 8:20 p.m. a loss and the skins can get in as a wild card. dave ross will explain those scenarios in about 30 minutes. our big story, last minute holiday shopping. if you haven't finished your christmas list, today is your last chance. many stores are trying to cash in on the last minute shoppers with megadeals and extended hours. fox 5's sherri ly is live with the details. good morning, sherri. >> reporter: good morning, tyson center just opened at 6:00 this morning. most of the stores are still closed. macy's is open. it has been open for 24 hours since the weekend. i better head over there. wait a minute, i have to finish here first. other stores will open at 8:00 and the rest at 10:00 this morning. a lot of the stores are offering great deals. we have seen deals throughout the mall, 50, 60% off. some buy one get one.

there are deep discounts as the stores make up for a weak holiday season. stores got off to a weak start. sales could surpass black friday. half of all consumers still had shopping to do. a number of stores are extending hours staying open around the clock. some are open late tonight to drum up business. so far sales have been disappointing. analysts say the number of shoppers over the weekend was on par with last year. they seem to be spending less. shopper track, a retail tracking firm downgraded its holiday forecast on friday. it had projected sales to grow 3.3% but dropped it to 2 1/2 percent now. analysts say the weak economy and worries about job growth are likely to blame for americans spending less. but, hey, if you are a procrastinator, a last minute shopper here, you will have company out there, not only with the people who still have

shopping to do but, get this, the national retail federation says about 4% of people don't even start their shopping until the last two weeks before christmas. they have great deals if you want to head out. that's the latest here. back to you. >> i believe it. last two weeks of shopping. that is all of us in the studio. >> all right. thanks, sherri. just over seven days and counting until we reach the fiscal cliff. no official talks are scheduled and lawmakers have left d.c. for the holiday break. president obama is in hawaii but may return early to resume negotiations. taxes for all americans will go up if a deal is not reached by january 1st. the main sticking points are tax hikes and spending cuts. we are learning more about the dui arrest of a u.s. senator. mike crawl crapo was pulled over in alexandria. an officer said he saw him run a red light.

police say he registered a blood alcohol level of .11. the legal limit in virginia is .08. the senator was released on bond about four hours later. the senator released a statement sunday saying i am deeply sorry. i made a mistake for which i apologize to my family, my idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. he is due in court january 4th. heading home for the holidays. nasty weather out west makes the journey longer for some people. we will take a look at mother nature. ♪

church leaders in newton, connecticut are getting standing ovation for helping the community cope with the recent school shooting. >> it happened in a number of churches over the weekend. there is no let up in the gun control debate since the massacre. the nra has been making the media rounds since friday. the gun lobbying group related -- said they are against any new gun control regulation. advocates hit the pavement for a candlelight vigil against gun violence. antigun protestors marched across the brooklyn bridge. demonstrators started on the manhattan and brooklyn sides meeting in the middle. they read the names of the 26 victims of the massacre. coming up later, the story of a special fourth grader who knows the true meaning of christmas even though she doesn't celebrate the holiday. >> what to expect if you are one of those last minute

people who waited until the last minute to head home for the holidays got stuck in this in nevada. snow showers hit reno and carson city making a difficult holiday commute more challenging. the storm closed a major highway between nevada and california. more snow is expected to pass through the area today. >> that is near the skiing in lake tahoe. they are used to getting snow there. >> stuck in a car, in the commute. >> i was stuck near truckee one time for ten hours. >> you were. >> yeah, when i was in college. >> oh, my gosh. >> tucker has all kinds of funny stories from his college

23 in culpeper. plenty of cold here. cold air is setting the stage for our storminess later on today. most of this action, the storm's energy understanding will stay to the west. as it stays to the west, it will push the warmer air in the washington area. we are not talking about a major storm system. this particular storm doesn't have any real moisture to tap into. so, precipitation totals should be fairly light. we will be cloudy. by 1:00, 2:00 today we will see showers move in. at the onset, particularly west and north of the city, you saw those cold temperatures early this morning, you will be slow to warm up. could you see a mix, a wintry mix of a few snowflakes and sleet out there as the whole system moves through. be ready for that possibility. we are not expecting travel difficulties today. this will be a quick mover. it should be out of here by early evening. cloudy skies, a little sleet changing to showers. winds north and west.

more appropriate. but i do not. vra is not running but metro is running on a regular weekday schedule. d.c. and maryland not enforcing meters, residential parking rules or restrictions. that is a look at your fox 5 on- time traffic. >> jeff, thank you. as jeff mentioned for anyone that has to work today, metro will operate on a normal weekday schedule. tomorrow, christmas day, trains and buses will run on a sunday schedule. that means they begin running at 7:00 a.m. with the rail system closing at midnight. a warning for drivers heading back to work next year. you will pay more for a trip on the dulles toll road. wtop radio reports tolls will increase 25 cents to a dollar seventy five beginning january 1st. tolls at the on and off ramps will increase by a quarter to one dollar. the money will be spends on the dulles metro rail project. up next, we go live to fox business network in new york

welcome back. in business beat, paying more by shopping around online? how some stores are using your internet search history to overcharge you. first a check of the markets. we are live in new york with the business week. good morning, lauren. >> reporter: good morning, sarah. >> what can we expect this week for the markets? >> well, nothing is happening today. the market closes three hours early and it's closed tomorrow for christmas. so, we will have very light volume. having said that, maybe things will pick up wednesday,

thursday and friday if traders come back to work. friday was a huge volume day, believe it or not. it was the highest and heaviest volume in six months. the dow was off 121 points. it's the end of the year. we will have last minute rebalancing of portfolios and it's like everything else, trying to get through to january 1st. >> that is so true. >> this next story really surprised me. i had no idea that apparently there is a form of online price discrimination that is going on. tell us about this? >> yeah. i just want to point out that it's anectdotal evidence. "the wall street journal" did incredible digging. they found that items like a staple from staples or certain electric wiring from home depot costs different prices in different markets. a few cents here and there. the reasons are varied but the

most obvious was location. retailers like discover financial services, home depot, staples and rosetta stone, they charge more when someone living in a certain zip code lives nearby to a competitor store -- they will charge less because they want you to buy from them. they will charge more if you are in a rural area or smaller area where a competitor is further away. they track some of your browsing to see the kind of things you look for. target prices that way as well. so, it's anectdotal but they are making connections here and there. >> interesting. i'm sure we will find out more about that as we are around the holidays. people wonder did i get a good deal on that sweater that i got for somebody. it makes you wonder a little bit. >> thanks, lauren. >> especially when you think the internet levels the playing field, tran pattern see is not necessarily the case. >> make shoppers smarter. >> thank you. >> merry christmas. >> merry christmas to you as well. still ahead in the next

welcome back. 6:30 on this christmas eve. >> big day. last minute shopping. santa arrives later tonight. the forecast looks okay. by okay we have a lot of clouds in the forecast. we get a period of -- and i wish it were going to be plain old snow. wouldn't that be great? if you are north and west you may see a few snowflakes. for the most part unfortunately

it will be a light misty rain this afternoon. 33 right now in town. 25 out at dulles. 28 bwi marshall. the further north and west the better chance of a wintry mix at the onset of this system. just getting its act together south and west in portions of southwestern virginia, eastern kentucky, you can see the green at the bottom of your screen. that will be moving in during the course of the day. the system is a weak one. the area of low pressure will stay to the west. warmer air across the region. not only at the surface but as you get up in the atmosphere, temperatures will warm. that's why we are thinking primarily a rain event, starting 1:00, 2:00. the whole thing wrapping up at 7:00, 8:00 tonight. we are hoping for better but there you go. a couple of sleet pellets, shower activity getting its act together by noon. showers later this afternoon. the whole thing will wind down early this evening. highs about 40. if you are north and west you may see the sleet pellets last

schedule. that's a look at your fox 5 on- time traffic. christmas is one day away. >> retailers are hoping to cash in after what experts say are lower than predicted holiday sales. many stores are extending hours and offering bargain deals. sherri ly is live at tyson corners with a look at the last minute vails. i see the guys hovering around in the background. >> reporter: no better time like the present to get the holiday shopping done guys and gals who might be procrastinating. i think santa needs a few stocking stuffers. there are a lot of deals out here. we have sunglasses. bright and sunny in the wintertime. 60% off. macy's is open. like a lot of stores, they began to stay open 24 hours around the clock this weekend trying to drum up business.

and a lot of stores will stay open late for the last minute shoppers. the holiday season kicked off earlier this year with black friday deals starting on thanksgiving. but that wasn't enough to keep sales on pace with projections. analysts dropped expectations because of weak numbers. those shopping last minute will find deep discounts. stores are dropping prices 50, 60 and 70% and offering freebies with purchases. about 4% of people don't even start their holiday shopping until the last two weeks before christmas. now, this year because thanksgiving was early, people had 32 shopping days between thanksgiving and christmas to get it down. stores like macy's and toys r us have been open 24 hours the past few days. with christmas eve it's now or never for shoppers. here at tysons, you can see the doors open inside at macy's. many of the stores at the mall are going to be opening up at

8:00 this morning. then the rest of them will open at 10:00 this morning, regular mall hours. over the weekend, a number of shoppers did hit the mall. this is on par with last year, but what we are hearing, they are spending less. but, hey, if you haven't done your shopping, come on out. we have a lot of bargains out here for you. some of those hot items may not be available any more. a lot of those are gone. but there is a lot to be had. that's the latest. back to you. >> all right, sherri. thank you. checking the other top stories, an american is dead in afghanistan. authorities will not say if it was another insider attack. this happened early this morning outside of police headquarters in kabul. investigators say an afghan police woman opened fire on a u.s. contractor but they have not said if the shooting was accidental or intentional. still no word on the victim's identity. support for folks in newtown, connecticut continues to pour in from all over the

this holiday season a special girl from virginia is making sure other's wishes come true. >> she was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor come true. she will have her wish of going to paris made by the make a wish foundation. she set out on a quest to raise money for the organization with the help of macy's. the store says they will make a donation to every letter sent to santa. she far exceeded her goal of

20,000 letters. >> she realized macy would give money. in the first ten days 21,000 letter then we raised the goal to 50,000. then we got to 100,000 letters. then we stopped setting goals after that. >> macy's donated another $25,000 in gabriella's honor. her family says she has been giving even donating her hair to locks of love long before she became ill herself. >> nice young lady. >> beautiful. >> nice story. >> what is going on. >> weather wise we have a lot to talk about today and the entire week. things will get active. we have a couple of different go arounds with potential of weather. today is mostly going to be a rain event and light rain at that. north and west of town a better and better chance you may see a

few sleet pellets mixed in or snowflakes at the onset of the storminess moving in. 33 in washington. you can see most of the area has fallen -- much of the area west of town has fallen into the 20s. it's cold. 29 quantico. 29 fredricksburg. 23 manassas. 29 martinsburg and 40 in annapolis. 30 in leonardtown. most of the area is at or below freezing. d.c., reagan national below the freezing mark. plenty of cold air in place. here comes the rain shower activity and storminess. it's not terribly organized. not a lot of moisture associated with it. the area of low pressure that is responsible will ride up to the west. that means we will see warmer air wash across the area. for those of you including myself that want to see snow for christmas eve, i'm afraid it won't happen this go around as the temperatures are just going to be too warm at the surface and as you climb up in

the atmosphere, temperatures will warm into the upper 30s and 40s. now it is cold enough that particularly at the start by 1:00, 2:00 when the moisture moves in, temperatures will be marginally cold that we may see wintry mix north and west. not expecting travel issues as the precipitation will be light. but there is the possibility of a little bit of wintry mix north and west of town. notice how quickly it's moving. light moisture amounts then it's out of here by 7:00, 8:00 tonight. we will clear things out and -- christmas day will be beautiful. today cloudy skies. winds northeast 5 to 10. the high temperature of 41 is below average. cold overnight. here is an active seven-day forecast. tuesday, sunny. wednesday another chance of a wintry mix changing to rain. 44. thursday and friday look good. another chance for winter precipitation around here on
